• THE BUZZ: Channing Tatum and his body have become the success story of 2012, the year the rippled young star might prove that he’s more talented than most of the material he has been handed thus far in his career. Making a pair of films in a short period of time with Steven Soderbergh will season any performer, and the whole G.I. Joe: Retaliation debacle (for the unaware: Tatum’s early death in the sequel is one of the many flubs that sent the picture back to the development/production board at Paramount just before its planned release) is a measure of how he’s becoming a rare example of an actor admired by women and men. Though this movie is based on a period in Tatum’s life, the story was supposed to center on co-star Alex Pettyfer, here playing a fictionalized version of young Tatum; the Beastly actor was at the top of many casting lists before a couple of flops and his apparently difficult personality cooled his fire. Speaking of reinvigorated careers: what we would pay to have heard Matthew McConaughey’s on-set advice for Tatum, Pettyfer, and company.
